years. The steamer touched at Yun Ki, Mahning, Kumchuk and Kaukong

taking 9, 2, 31 and 37 passengers at these places respectively. Dinner

was served in the saloon at 6 p.m. the Captain, E. W. Joslin, the

Chief Engineer, J. . Seggie, and Dr. MacDonald being present. At

about 8.45 these three were talking together on the deck outside the

saloon door on the port side when they saw one of the Indian watchmen

running forward towards them pursued by a Chinese with a revolver-

Captain Joslin hurried aft to the watchman's help and knocked down his

assailant who however sprung up and fired at him at close quarters.

The bullet struck him full in the middle of the body. A number of men

armed with revolvers came running up the ladder. The three Europeans

accompanied by the watchman turned back and made for the ladder lead-

-ing to the wheelhouse where the arns were kept, but were headed off

by a second band of pirates who had come up on the starboard side.

They took refuge in the saloon, but the pirates began to pour their

fire through the windows to avoid which the four men got under the

table a solid teakwood one. A stink-pot" was however thrown in,

burning the engineer considerably and rendering the position unten-

-able. Dr. MacDonald Captain Joslin and the Indian watchman went out

by the starboard door and Mr. Saggie, the Engineer, by the port loor.

The latter ran the gauntlet of a number of pirates who were firing

wildly and got down into the stoxe-hole where he remained safely

concealed behind the boiler in spite of a determined search for him

by the pirates. Meanwhile Captain Joslin, becoming weak with his

wound, fell down into the passenger cabin forward of the saloon. Dr. MacDonald also lay down, having probably received from one of the

flying bullets a wound in the abdomen. One of the pirates came up to

him and put a bullet into his brain at very close quarters. The

pirates then found Captain Joslin who feigned death. They saw his

wound and kicked him several times. They pulled off his coat and

trousers and finger ring, and left him lying in the cabin for dead.
